The Kasigau Corridor REDD Project - Phase II

Wildlife Works’ Kasigau Corridor REDD+ Project protects over 500,000 acres of highly threatened Kenyan forest known as the Kasigau Corridor, securing the entire wildlife migration corridor between Tsavo East and Tsavo West National Parks.

Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD) was originated by the United Nations to help stop the destruction of the world’s forests. “REDD+” goes beyond deforestation and includes the role of conservation, community development and job creation, and enhancement of forest carbon stocks among other benefits.
 

Social and Sustainability Benefits

This project is strongly contributing to sustainable development: 

• Protects 500,000 acres of threatened forests
• Sustainable charcoal programme creates small enterprise business opportunities
• A new eco-factory creates hundreds of jobs producing organic and fair trade clothing
• Fulltime, year round monitoring of forests and biodiversity protects the area and creates jobs for the plot sampling staff and a force of unarmed rangers
• Protects the home of over 50 species of large mammals and 300 species of birds and populations of IUCN Red List of threatened species such as Cheetahs, Lions and over 2000 African elephants
